Love, Jarred: Why Real Raw Honey Beats Flowers This Valentine's Day

February 03, 2026

I'll admit, I'm not exactly the “romantic type”. Karen would probably roll her eyes reading that! But after nearly three decades obsessing over honey, I see it as one of the most romantic gifts anyone could receive.

“More romantic than flowers, Tim?”

Well… yes. Here's why:

Honey and 'Love' Have Gone Hand in Hand For Thousands of Years.

The word "honeymoon" isn't a coincidence. It comes from an old medieval tradition where newlyweds would drink honey wine (mead) for the first month of their marriage. A whole month of honey! The sweetness was meant to ensure fertility and a happy union.

Also, the ancient Greeks believed it was a gift from Aphrodite. And Eros, her cherub son, was said to dip his love arrows in honey before letting loose on mortals.

So when you taste a really good raw honey, you can understand why they thought it came from the gods.

The Problem with Roses

Don't get me wrong, flowers are lovely. But a bouquet lasts what, a week? Maybe ten days if you're lucky and change the water? A jar of raw honey lasts years. Archaeologists have found 3,000-year-old honey in Egyptian tombs that was still perfectly edible. Though I wouldn't recommend waiting quite that long!

And unlike flowers, honey doesn't just sit there. It becomes part of daily life with little morning tea rituals, or Sunday pancakes in bed. Turning it into a lovely reminder of the person who gave it to you.

That's the thing about a thoughtful gift… it keeps giving long after it's unwrapped.

Why "Real" Honey Matters

Here's where I have to put my honey obsession hat on for a moment!

Most of the honey on supermarket shelves isn't really honey in the meaningful sense. It's been:

  • Heated
  • Ultra-filtered
  • Blended with who-knows-what
  • Adulterated with cheap sugar syrups

So the romance of honey, and its connection to the bees, flowers and wild places gets processed right out of it.

Which is why choosing a genuine raw honey holds sooo much more value. Because they’re NOT anonymous blends. They're honeys that should be treated like fine wines. Each one has the uniquely rich flavour and properties of the place it came from and the flowers the bees visited.

That's a gift with meaning!

The Real Point

Valentine's Day has become a bit of a commercial circus, hasn't it? Overpriced roses, heart-shaped chocolates, cards with terrible puns.

There's nothing wrong with any of it. But to me, it feels a bit… fabricated. Maybe I’m just getting old and grumpy! Haha!

But honey offers something different. Something with history, meaning, and actual substance. It's a gift that says: I want your life to be sweeter, and I want to be part of that sweetness, one morning at a time.

And I don’t know about you, but I think that's worth more than flowers that'll be in the bin within a week.

Happy Valentine’s day to you and your loved one!
