We have secured a further limited quantity of this honey that sold out in a couple of days in March. 120 x 500g jars - of this very special and unique award-winning honey - are available. It has won in the Great Taste Awards for the last four years.
This is a very unusual honey. Smilax Aspera is also known as Bearberry and it grows on the mountains, draped over the Pine Trees. Back in September I was with Asterios on Mount Pelion in Greece and he told me about the amazing honey that comes from this climber, that was all around us. Deep caramel and stewed fruit are some of the notes with a deep stewed fruit flavour, a hint of nutmeg and it keeps delivering with an explosion of flavour notes.
What the Great Taste Awards Judges had to say:
" Rich vibrant gold with a hint of cloudiness. This honey exhibits sharp citrus and fruity aromas, with heady notes of hellebore, delphinium, wild herbs and pine forest floor. An easy-drizzle, runny consistency with a pungent burst of flavour and light silky consistency. With ripe stone fruit, nutmeg and saffron on the palate and an appealingly elegant floral finish, this honey would be ideal with Greek yoghurt."
"A dark golden amber honey with a gentle haze, full of pine forest notes and with a very wet and runny viscosity. The honey dissolves readily, leaves wonderful bright floral and pine forest notes on the palate with a gentle acidity that creeps up behind, followed by more layers of pine. Beautifully balanced and moreish."
Where does the honey come from? This honey comes from the beautiful Halkidiki region of mainland Greece where the Smilax creeper drapes itself over the Pine Trees. Far away from pollution and a haven for the bees.
Who produces this honey? Asterios is one of the most genuine people you could ever meet. His aim is always to present to us the highest quality honey possible. He is lucky enough to have an amazing network of fellow artisan Greek beekeepers. This honey is bought to you by one such young beekeeper Alexandros along with his father Pantzis. For this family beekeeping is an art and they are excited that their honey will be appreciated in the UK.
Please know that raw honey does crystalise and this is a natural process that occurs mainly due to the natural glucose in raw honey. For more information on why honey sets visit this article and for a more scientific explanation go to wikipedia.
