Honey better treatment for coughs and colds than antibiotics, study claims
Recently a review by Oxford University scientists and scientists from Nuffield Health focused on studies into the effectiveness of honey in treating coughs and respiratory infections.
The Guardian reporting on the study said:
Data analysis of the studies indicated that honey was more effective than usual care for improving symptoms, especially the frequency and severity of coughing. Two of the studies showed that symptoms lasted one to two days less among those treated with honey.
The Scientists said:
“Honey is more effective and less harmful than usual care alternatives and avoids causing harm through antimicrobial resistance.”
This is hardly news to Raw Honey Shop customers and millions of people around the world. Nevertheless, it is good to get some proof.
The researchers noted that "honey is a complex substance and not a uniform product".
Here at the Raw Honey Shop we know from other studies that the antibacterial affect of honey varies a lot between different varieties. In our experience it is generally the darker honeys that have stronger antibacterial qualities.
Raw artisan honeys, straight from the beekeeper are often thicker and more viscous than commercial honeys that you buy in the supermarket. This is better for coating the throat.
Also, because the honey hasn't been heated the antibacterial quality is stronger.
Here are our recommendations for the three best honeys for coughs and colds:
(Please note that honey should not be given to children under the age of one. Occasionally honey contains spores of botulism, which can affect children under the age of one.)
Calluna is a kind of heather. It has a jelly like consistency, unique amongst honeys. This means that it is quite sticky. It has also featured in various scientific studies and been shown to have quite a strong antibacterial effect -which could discourage secondary bacterial infections in a weakened throat area.
(The antibacterial properties in honey partly come from a mild solution of hydrogen peroxide, which is naturally found in honey, especially dark honeys like Calluna.)
Beech & Oak honey. This is a dark thick honey with a quite strong and less sweet flavour than other honeys. A lot of Raw Honey Shop customers use this when they have a cough or sore throat.
Thyme honey. Thyme itself is know as a medicinal antibacterial plant and thyme honey is used by many people as a therapeutic honey.
