The Raw Greek Chestnut Honey from Mount Athos has a deliciously rich and deep molasses flavour with a bitterness reminiscent of the aroma from freshly brewed coffee. You will still be tasting this honey in your throat 10 minutes and more after you have eaten it. Not for the faint-hearted - so please don't buy if you dislike bitter notes! 

About the beekeeper: This honey was brought to us by Thomas, a very talented young Greek beekeeper. 

Thomas was able to get this incredibly rare honey from the Monks of Mount Athos, who have been practicing the ancient monastic tradition of beekeeping for hundreds of years. 

Where it comes from: Mount Athos is both the name of the mountain and the peninsula situated in north-eastern Greece. Also named the "Holy Mountain", it represents an important centre of Eastern Orthodox monasticism.

Colour: It is very dark - with a brown-reddish colour. 

More on Chestnut honey: This is a dark thick runny honey which has deep, full bodied, slightly smoky, earthy tones. These deliver a more savoury taste than most other honeys.

The bees love to feed on the sap that comes from the tree as well as the blossoms. The tree lends a beautiful and unique taste to the honey, the nutty flavour carries through as well as a taste a little similar to maple syrup but slightly more rich and malty.  This Chestnut honey has a slightly bitter taste. However, Chestnut honey varies a lot, differing considerably from one area to another. Some is mild, some is bitter.
